Assignment 2 - Self expressive pattern

Pattern inspired sketches

For the first part of this assignment, we had to sketch out anything we could observe using gridlines as a guide. Not only do we just sketch out the items we see but we were meant to draw out sections out of each object which was different and unexpected for me.This is so we could get some inspiration to move on to the next part of the assignment. When i first found out that the minimum requirement for the sketches was two pages, I immediately thought about wanting to do more than that ,so that was exactly what I did. During the process of sketching, it wasn't the easiest thing because as I got to two pages, I ran out of ideas but I knew that I couldn't stop there. I had to do more. I searched for the tiniest little things in my bedroom to sketch out in order to achieve more pages and I must say that the gridlines was somewhat useful.

Exploration of pattern design

For the second part of this assignment, we had to explore designing a range of patterns using parts/sections of the sketches that we've done before hand. This part of the assignment was challenging for me because it was difficult to get some ideas when it comes to combining some of the sketches that has been done but however, I managed to picture and imagine what my ideas would look like when combined. Patterns in general ,weren't something that I was the best at. I definitely wasn't a professional at all as limited amount of ideas came into my head. Because the idea of pattern designing was very new to me all of the sudden ,It made the process difficult. In my honest opinion, I was expecting the outcome of pretty much all of my exploration pieces to be much better. Some of it looked plain, dull and simple which wasn't according to my expectations so I definitely was upset but I knew I tried my best.

Final artwork

After the process of exploring different design patterns, I felt more confident into what I wanted my artwork to look like. Based on the artwork above, I have made a different kind of approach towards the idea of patterns. In my head, I thought it would be nice to include an illusion of a human figure that stands out in the artwork as the colours are more bolded than the rest, and thats exactly what i did. Throughout the process of painting, I decided that I wanted the background to be filled with pastel colours as I had come across with good outcome when I tested light colours on the background. Throughout the process of completing this final pattern, it was time consuming but it was honestly really fun to do and at the end of the day, I did manage to pick up some knowledge not only on patterns but graphic design as well.
